We Need Fat! Of course it must be healthy fat. Healthy fats do everything for your body. Well if not everything then it’s pretty darn close. They: support your immune system, detoxify your body, aid in cell production, brain function, energy production, blood sugar regulation, it surrounds and protects your organs, boosts metabolism, promotes healthy skin and hair, great messenger for the absorption of vitamins and minerals. I’m sure I left so much out, but you get the idea.
But what is healthy fat and how much do we need?
We need to get between 20%-35% of our total calories from fat. That’s usually between 50-60 grams of fat daily.
As for what kinds of fat, I’m going to say we probably need ALL kinds. Generally we need the good kinds of fat: poly-and mono- unsaturated, some saturated fat, and some very small amounts of cholesterol and trans fat.
So now you know fat is vital to the health of our systems. I’m sure this will make many people happy, well me too! I like fat as much as the next person. But now you know how much fat and what kind. The educated consumer is the healthy consumer…..
