Product of Your Environment

December 8, 2009

We have many clients whose life we’ve touched and changed. Because of this they tell their friends about us, but many times the friends decide not to come here and train. The reason I have often heard is that they are afraid. What are they afraid of? Getting healthier, looking better, feeling great…No, they are afraid of change! Alas don’t they get it? If you want to change something about your life then you need to change something about your life. This might be the most profound statement you’ve ever read, but it’s quite impactful.

People are almost always the product of their environment. Their family, friends, history, financial status, all these factor into one’s lifestyle and environment. Are you capable of changing an unhealthy environment? You bet you are! Certain situations may greatly increase the difficulty of choice, but the choice remains the same. The first thing a person must do is assume all responsibility for everything that has happened or has failed to happen to them. Once you adopt this as a philosophy for governing your life, you become empowered to see that you decide your future through the choices you make. These choices are ultimately yours, don’t be frightened by them. If you choose to become healthier than do it regardless of what your friends or family may think or say. If all your friends go out drinking, you don’t have to go, or if you do go, order a club soda. If your family doesn’t understand why you are not eating that sugary dessert, just tell them it’s a choice that you’ve made to become healthier. If they don’t understand then that’s their problem not yours.

Yes we are all a product of our environment, but if it’s not conducive to what you are trying to do here, then change it. I know I did. Make the changes around you so that it will be easier to do what you want to do in this life. Don’t surround yourself with unhappy, unhealthy people. Don’t put yourself in a situation where drinking is the primary reason for gathering.

I don’t buy the premise that we are the product of our environment…if you don’t like it CHANGE IT!
