Break the Sugar Habit

December 8, 2009

We, who are addicted to sugar, probably don’t even know it. But make no mistake, if you have more than 2 teaspoons of sugar a day, regardless of where it comes from, you’re addicted. The last e-mail I sent described all the infirmities involved with sugar, so how do you break the sugar habit? Like all habits, sugar is not easy to break. It takes determination, discipline, education, and will. The good news is that the less sugar you ingest the less sugar you want. So how do you ingest less sugar? Substitute! Educate yourself as to where sugar is hiding, then replace it with something with less sugar or none at all. Here are just a few examples:

Bottled salad dressing with sugar………………………replace with…………………….oil and vinegar

Ketchup……………………………………………………………..replace with…………………….slices of tomato

Canned sweet peas…………………………………………..replace with……………………..frozen baby sweet peas

Instant oatmeal with sugar………………………………..replace with……………………..regular oatmeal with cinnamon

Pasta sauce…………………………………………………………replace with……………………..crushed tomatoes and basil

Skittles………………………………………………………………..replace with……………………. peanut M&M’s (less sugar)

Sugar……………………………………………………………………replace with …………………….cinnamon, agave nectar, or stevia where applicable

Sugar in coffee or tea………………………………………….replace with…………………….nothing or stevia or agave nectar

Alcoholic beverages……………………………………………replace with……………………..less or no alcoholic beverages

Baking with sugar………………………………………………..replace with……………………..stevia or agave nectar The fact is, use your head when it comes to eating clean. The less sugar, the better off you’ll be and feel and the healthier you will become.
